Jackie O Reveals Two-Year Battle with Prescription Drug Addiction and Alcohol Abuse
Jackie 'O' Henderson revealed her two-year struggle with prescription drug addiction, detailing a dangerous mix of pills and alcohol. Her radio break in 2022 was actually a 28-day rehab stay, not a recovery from 'long COVID.' Henderson's addiction began over 15 years ago due to pain management for endometriosis, escalating during the pandemic. She credits her friend Gemma O'Neill for intervening and saving her life. Now nearing two years clean, Henderson shares her story in her memoir, "The Whole Truth."
Jackie 'O' Henderson has candidly shared her harrowing two-year battle with prescription drug addiction. In a recent radio broadcast, she revealed personal details about her struggles, which included a dangerous combination of pills and alcohol, shocking both listeners and her co-host, Kyle Sandilands. This revelation comes with the unveiling of her memoir, The Whole Truth.
Henderson's Dark Journey into Addiction
On October 24, Henderson spoke emotionally to KIISFM listeners, describing her descent into addiction as a profoundly dark experience. She highlighted how addiction alters one’s mental state, making it nearly impossible to seek help. The turning point in her life occurred in 2022 when she reached a breaking point and confided in her close friend and business partner, Gemma O'Neill. Recognizing the severity of Henderson's condition, O'Neill insisted she enter rehabilitation, leading Henderson to the renowned Betty Ford Centre.
The Road to Recovery and Support from Friends
Despite her initial resistance to the idea of rehab, Henderson ultimately credited O'Neill's intervention as life-saving. She fondly reflected on her friend's determination, stating that she believes O'Neill ultimately saved her life by not allowing her to refuse help. This experience marks nearly two years of sobriety for Henderson, and while it is a significant personal achievement, it also reflects a common struggle faced by many.
Longstanding Struggles with Prescription Medications
The Australian star's dependence on prescription drugs reportedly began over 15 years ago when she was prescribed a potent opioid painkiller for her endometriosis. Henderson recalled being aware of her growing reliance on the medication, which made her cease taking it momentarily. However, after her divorce in 2018, she returned to the opioids, seeking solace during a painful time in her life.
Escalation of Drug Use During the Pandemic
Henderson further revealed her escalating drug use, particularly the combination of sleep medication Stilnox with alcohol. She described the disorienting effects of this mixture, indicating a state of functionality without memory. The pandemic exacerbated her habits, and the quantities she consumed reached alarming levels, with reports of up to 24 Panadeine Forte and 12 Stilnox daily. Through her candidness, Henderson expressed gratitude for surviving such hazardous conditions, emphasizing the precarious nature of her addiction journey.
