Jimmy Barnes reveals health update after urgent hip surgery and cancels shows due to pain

Jimmy Barnes expresses relief at being home

Now recuperating at home with his family, the 68-year-old artist took to Instagram to express his joy at returning home. He shared, "I can't tell you how great it feels to be back in my own bed, back to our home and the beautiful garden. Of course, being very spoilt." Barnes's candid remarks highlight the importance of comfort and familiarity during his recovery.

High-protein diet and ongoing physiotherapy

Barnes has embarked on a high-protein diet while continuing his physiotherapy sessions, which he described as "getting tougher." He praised his wife, Jane Barnes, for her cooking skills, remarking, "If I'm to be on a high-protein recovery diet, I've come to the right place." The diet includes his favourite meals like lobster mornay and protein-enriched dishes such as cranberry protein shortbread and double cheeseburgers, as he aims to rebuild his strength.

Details surrounding the hip surgery

The need for surgery arose when Barnes experienced significant pain in his hip while on a trip to New Zealand. He announced the situation on Facebook, stating, "I've got some bad news, unfortunately. I had a twinge in my hip when I was leaving Dunedin (NZ) on Thursday morning, and by late last night the pain was unbearable, so I went off to hospital." Following medical advice, he underwent a remedial procedure to address the alarming issue, revealing that he expects to make a full recovery within six weeks.

Tour cancellations and heartfelt apologies

Barnes acknowledged the impact this unexpected surgery would have on his schedule, announcing that his August and September solo shows would be affected. He communicated to ticket holders that they would be contacted with updates soon. Expressing his regret, he stated, "I hate to let anyone down, but I'm also never going to compromise the quality of my gigs. I apologise for the inconvenience this will cause everyone — I HATE moving shows! — but thank you for understanding."

A history of health challenges

Prior to this latest surgery, Barnes had been sharing updates on his fitness journey following his open-heart surgery earlier in 2023. In December, he revealed a bacterial infection had spread to his heart, requiring immediate medical intervention to replace an infected valve. Despite facing numerous health hurdles, Barnes continues to remain optimistic about his recovery and the future.
