The statue of Australian music icon Ian 'Molly' Meldrum has been vandalised for the second time, suffering damage from attempted digging and previous graffiti. Originally located in Richmond, Victoria, the statue is currently under repair. A statue honoring Australian music industry legend Ian 'Molly' Meldrum has faced vandalism for the second time in Richmond, Victoria. The iconic sculpture, designed by Louis Lauman, captures the 81-year-old Countdown host in a Stetson hat and an Egyptian-themed t-shirt while holding his dog Ziggy.
Recent Vandalism Incident and Previous Attacks
The statue, located in Wangaratta Street Park, was targeted last month when vandals attempted to dig it up, causing considerable damage. Although there is no confirmation on whether the intent was to steal or to topple the statue, the City of Yarra Council has since removed it for repairs. This incident is not isolated; the statue was previously defaced with red paint and graffiti in 2023, which left the likeness of Meldrum with blood-like tears, and both his dog and clothing were vandalized as well.
Ian Meldrum's Current Health Status
Amidst these incidents, Meldrum continues to face health challenges. Recent photographs shared by his boyfriend, Thai businessman Yan Wongngam, depict Meldrum looking frail, drawing a stark contrast to his vibrant appearance at the Australian Open in January. Images from social media show him resting on a couch and lying on the verandah, signaling his need for quiet moments away from public life.
Milestone Celebration and Public Engagement
As November approaches, it marks 50 years since the launch of Countdown, the influential ABC music program that catapulted Meldrum to fame. Despite his declining health, he missed a recent Royal Australian Mint event in Melbourne, which was set to introduce a commemorative coin celebrating the show. Gavin Wood, a longtime friend, noted that Meldrum has been dealing with health issues, particularly following a severe fall in 2011.
Meldrum's Legacy and Sentiments
Despite not attending the coin launch, Meldrum provided a statement expressing joy over the tribute, stating, "Do yourself a favour and get one." He reminisced fondly about Countdown's impact on the Australian music scene, highlighting that the show created lasting memories and changed the industry. Wood remarked that Meldrum would be delighted by the beautiful and imaginative coins celebrating the legacy of the iconic show.
